Firefighters have worked for years to protect everyday Americans and they deserve their pensions and benefits that are guaranteed to them by New York State. Over the past several months the conversations at our meetings have been focused on the budget situation and potential cuts across the board. While there has not been a concrete step to cut the pensions of retired firefighters, it is the consensus that we must all act proactively to prevent a possible betrayal at the hands of the legislature, mayor or governor. Retired firefighters cannot afford to stay silent.

The current plan of action is to counter efforts by various politicians trying to poison public support and turn it against us. We cannot allow a P.R. campaign against us to go unchallenged. As one retired firefighter put it "Ten years ago we were heroes, and now they treat us like bums." We do not want the public to perceive us this way. Firefighters hold a role in saving lives (as opposed to your basic bureaucrat) risking both their life and health to do so. We need that bond with the public. In order to do so we must fight back in the public arena.

As a united organization we must contact state legislators and city councilmen. Together we can overcome these obstacles and remind them to listen to us. By constantly reinforcing our position we can overcome any obstacle and encourage others to follow our lead.

Now is the time to send letters to the editors of our newspapers and post comments at their websites, call into radio shows, and to establish our presence online. As a matter of fact, when properly used, web-based communities like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Blogs have been proven to allow groups of any size to join together, raise awareness, and influence the policies in issue.

This type of online activism becomes possible because websites like these enable individual users and groups to form communities, post articles, interviews, and comments, and reach out to more members of the community than ever before. All kinds of social media will allow us to fight back. Posting messages on these social networking sites will give us more exposure. It will give us a better chance to bond with the public and increase the support for our cause. These outlets can connect us with people who have not heard of this struggle.

As I’ve stated before, firefighters speaking up for firefighters is a sure method of protecting our interests. We must not allow others to de-value our strength or make us believe any different. Our hard work and dedication will be our stepping stones to success. I strongly believe that we can challenge legislation and significantly change our future.
