Restaurants in York? Going From the Sublime to the Carnivorous at the Grange Hotel |
||||
|
The Grange Hotel in York has long been lauded for its 2 Rosette restaurant ‘The Ivy’ located on Bootham, near York’s city centre and historic walls. So why would an established, luxury 4 star hotel want to risk this carefully cultivated reputation by launching its New York Grill in the UK? |

Completely separate from the main restaurant, the New York Grill is situated in the hotel’s historic brick vaulted cellars, where the feel is more laid back with friendly, yet not intrusive, service. Black and white photos of New York decorate the pastel toned walls, soft music plays in the background and there’s a sophisticated yet relaxed feel to the restaurant.
As the name suggests the restaurant specializes in steaks & grills with the menu featuring 7 different cuts of steak ranging from an 8oz rump at £14.50 to a Cote de Boeuf for 4 people at £72.95. There are also delicious burgers, salads and fish dishes and popular dishes such as sausage & mash, fish cakes, warm chicken salad, Caesar salad and honey glazed spare ribs.
Arguably The Grange Hotel has spotted a gap in the market, as York has yet to see the influx of chain steak restaurants which have become the staple of many cities over the last ten years. There has certainly been a trend towards specialist restaurants of this type, yet the Chinese, Indian and Italian options in York appear to be in over-supply and in terms of places to eat in York, there is obviously an appetite for something a little bit different.
Commenting on who the New York Grill might appeal to, Mr Briffa says “It will be open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner and we’re hopeful that resident guests will use it, as well as people living in the area who are ready for a new York restaurant! Prices are moderate, but customers can expect the same 2 rosette standard we provide in The Ivy, with a very different menu and atmosphere. York is also very popular with Americans, so there’s always the chance they’ll fancy a little bit of home while on holiday.”
So amongst a plethora of restaurants in York, it appears that the sublime 2 rosette Ivy complements the carnivorous New York Grill perfectly, and with separate entrances never the twain shall meet. For further information please call 01904 644744
