Keeping Up With Product Recalls
A number of organizations not only report recent recalls, but promote improvements in product safety standards, encouraging better testing and more thorough product information for the consumer’s benefit.
Some of the most useful product recall resources include:
• Recalls.gov – Through this site, the government provides the public with comprehensive recall information collected from six different agencies. Any hazardous, unsafe, or defective products that have announced recalls will be published here.
• SaferCar.gov – Defective vehicles can be extremely dangerous. If you are looking to purchase a new car, SUV, or truck soon, it is a good idea to keep an eye on this website for the latest recall alerts, crash tests, and rollover ratings.
• Public Citizen – This national non-profit organization is dedicated to consumer advocacy, working toward improvements in product safety and effectiveness. Public Citizen is especially concerned with the safety of passenger vehicles, health care, energy sources, health and environmental protections, social and economic trade policies, and prescription drugs.
• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – The NHTSA was established to prevent accident injuries and save the lives of motorists on the road. Motor vehicle accidents are not only deadly for drivers, they are also hard on the economy. NHTSA enforces safety standards and strives to keep motorists educated with the latest research.
• U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – Thousands of consumer products must answer to this agency’s jurisdiction. The CPSC works to protect public citizens from the unreasonable risks posed by defective products, especially products that can potentially cause a fire, chemical, electrical, or mechanical hazard. Toys and cribs that can injure children are also a major concern.
• U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – Both food products and pharmaceutical drugs need to meet rigorous quality standards in order to be deemed safe for consumption and use. The FDA’s website contains information on product approvals, recalls, and other product safety concerns.
