Repairing a garage door that won’t work is paramount. Clearly leaving it open exposes your house to vandalism and intruders but not being able to open it also creates its own problems. Having a car stuck seriously impacts the business of getting around town. Not being able to protect your vehicle inside exposes it to the elements and to theft. This is why it is important to remedy the problem as soon as possible.
It may seem overly simple but be sure to check the batteries in your remote first. Often the easiest solution is the right one. Also check to make sure there is power to the opener unit. Testing the lights or other electrical aspect of the opener can check this. If these still don’t correct the problem it may be time to call a professional.
If the electrical aspects seem to be in order then it is time to check the mechanical components. Begin by verifying that all of the hinges and springs are functioning and free of corrosion. Also check that they are securely attached. Tighten any loose pieces and replace any hinges or springs that are worn out. Follow up the thorough once over with lubricating oil and check that everything is free to move. Especially make sure to lubricate the tracks and wheels that move the unit up and down. Often, repairing a garage door involves no more than these simple steps. If they don’t fix the problem they certainly will help to maintain the piece after it is fixed.
A big part of repairing your garage door is keeping it in good condition. Checking for mold and mildew or dry rot on wood pieces is most important. Metal needs to be checked for rust and dents. Regardless of the material be sure to paint or otherwise treat it to get the most life out of it. Simple cleanliness is also not to be missed. Dirt and grime can gunk up the mechanism and cause the pieces to stick preventing operation.
Whether your attempts at repairing your garage door are successful or not doesn’t necessarily matter. The steps you have taken will put your unit in a good operating condition so that if you must call and have someone come out you can be sure it will be working well when they are done.
