Rehmannia is a Chinese herb that is often combined with other herbs to treat anemia (ah-NE-me-ah) (decreased oxygen to tissues), cancer, constipation (hard stools), and diabetes. Other uses include the treatment of fatigue (tiredness), high blood pressure, sleeping problems, and ringing in your ears. Rehmannia may be applied to the skin to treat eczema or psoriasis (skin diseases). It may also be used to treat cuts and wounds.

Rehmannia is commonly used in clinics in the orient and is called di-huang, or yellow earth. It is used to regulate hormones, reduce cramps, and provide iron, helping with urinary tract problems, anemia, dizziness, and regulating menstrual flow. It is protective to the liver and helps prevent the depletion of stored glycogen, which can make it beneficial for hypoglycemia. Rehmannia is a fundamental Kidney tonic in Chinese herbalism, and is considered to be a primary longevity herb. It is found in a great many common anti-aging formulations. It is considered rejuvenating and life lengthening. Steamed Rehmannia is said to benefit the kidneys and sexual functions in men and women and is included in almost every formula that is designed to strengthen reproductive functions, including fertility. It forms the Yin base of many men potency formulas.
Prepared Rehmannia is a major blood tonic. This is of course of special importance to women, who always need to rebuild blood. Steamed Rehmannia, when combined with Dang Gui, Ligusticum and Peony forms the quintessential women herbal combination. Prepared Rehmannia is said to be warm in nature and thus warms up the uterus in women. There are two fundamental varieties of Rehmannia used in Chinese herbalism: prepared and raw. Raw Rehmannia is used primarily in medicinal herbalism to cool down inflammatory conditions. Prepared Rehmannia is highly tonic. It has been prepared by soaking in a special blend of wine (which itself has been specially prepared with Amomi and Tangerine peel), and then steaming and sun drying. The Rehmannia becomes deep black, soft and sticky. It is sold in slices in most markets for easily handling. Most Prepared Rehmannia sold in America is of high quality. It may be tasted raw. It will be soft, easily chew, fine in texture and very sweet. Overuse can lead to abdominal distension and loose stools.
It has been reported that simple sugars are present in very large amounts in the decoction made from cooked Rehmannia (the more cloying form): more than three times as much as in decoctions made from raw Rehmannia (the less cloying form). Presumably, the steaming process that yields cooked Rehmannia breaks down the ordinary starches in the root to simple sugars. The combination of raw Rehmannia, anemarrhena, plus licorice was fed to rats who were administered dexamethasone for two months; this drug impairs adrenal function. The herbs promoted growth, lowered plasma glucose, decreased plasma-free fatty acids, and increased plasma cortisone, suggesting a protective effect for the adrenals. The two forms that are generally available to practitioners everywhere are dried Rehmannia root (gan dihuang or gansheng dihuang,
