Reasons to holiday in the Languedoc, Pyrenees Orientales

The Languedoc is in the Pyrenees area of France. The Pyrenees is made up of the beaches of the Mediterranean and glorious mountain ranges. This article explains the diversity of the Languedoc region and offers information on things to do in the Pyrenees and outlines differing holiday experiences.

The Languedoc is one of the most fascinating areas of Europe, blessed with a wonderful climate with over 300 days of sunshine every year. It boasts a stunning coast, beautiful scenery and amazing history. There are many things to see and do.

Its geographical position ensures temperate weather conditions; hot dry summers with mild winters. Although the ski resorts and mountain ranges remain snow capped throughout most of the year.

The appeal of the Pyrenees Orientales is limitless and the list of things to do is endless for holiday makers, this may explain why in August Paris is empty as most of France travels to the Languedoc for their vacation.

There are world class naturist resorts which offer a unique holiday experience.

Activity holidays are also popular, due to the diverse landscape it is possible to participate in numerous sports on one trip, as facilities are within very short travelling distances.

You can participate in water sports on the many lakes and beaches along the Mediterranean coast, from boating and yachting to rafting and water skiing.

Other activities include golfing, horse riding, skiing and fishing.

The Languedoc is renowned for its wine production. The wine here is fresh and plentiful with vineyards around every corner. Food is always prepared from locally grown produce in the Pyrenees Orientales and is always a gastronomic affair. The rose or blush vintages are particularly good. The locals drink cava instead of champagne as it is located so near to where it is produced in Spain.

Many important museums and art galleries are located here and Dali and Picasso have worked here. The area of Colliure, in the Languedoc, is still home to many artists today.

The Pyrenees Orientales is in the Languedoc-Roussillon area in south west France which borders Spain and the Mediterranean.

Set in spectacular countryside with the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees Orientales borders are formed by mountains.

This is a popular travel destination for holiday makers who sun bathe on the fabulous beaches which are dotted all around the coast from France through to Spain.

Many tourists visit the region to walk or trek through the mountains. Cycling is the number one sport in France, this area has excellent cycling routes from novice to advanced, well served by cycling clubs who are more than happy to hire you a bike or take you on a ride. The Pyrenees Orientales is a wonderful place to spend a holiday not just in the summer but also in winter. With excellent French Christmas markets along with the many ski resorts, such as Font Romeu. Mont Canigou is over 300 metres high and dominates the skyline. Skiing in the Languedoc is relatively cheap compared to some of the other French, Swiss and Italian resorts.

Getting to the Languedoc is easy. Major airports for the region are Carcassonne, Montpellier, Perpignan, and Toulouse. Or fly to Gerona (Girona) in Spain and just drive across the border, as car hire and fuel is cheaper in there.

Views of mountains, rivers lakes, castles and churches seem to appear almost everywhere in the Languedoc.

There are many more reasons to visit the Languedoc, but the most endearing reason is the locals. They are who are friendly and cultured. Languages spoken in the Languedoc are French and Catalan (which is now taught in schools) and some Spanish.
