Quality of Material
Custom built furniture is a big investment and can be quite costly, which is why you want to ensure you are getting the proper material that you are paying for. A good scam artist or even just a lazy carpenter can easily duplicate rich woods and other pricey materials, saving them money and leaving you with an inferior product.
Professional companies normally won't risk their reputations by trying to sneak some particleboard into your furniture, so spending extra is wise. You may also ask to see samples of all of the material beforehand to make sure it's the real deal.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
This is a common saying you'll hear the best carpenters muttering as they carefully measure their work over and over again to ensure it's done correctly the first time. If you're placing an order with a company that ships the piece to you, it is up to you to give the exact measurements.
Be extremely careful and if something doesn't fit, you should have some sort of documentation in order to determine who is at fault. If you're very cautious during this step, you should have few if any troubles.
Durability
One of the main reasons for investing in custom built furniture is that they are far more durable and should last many, many years. In fact, a good piece of furniture should easily outlast you and be able to be handed down through many generations.
If you find significant wear and tear after only a few years, the company should be willing to compensate or repair within reason. Check to see if the builders you are working with have any warranties or guarantees on their products. If not, seek professionals who do.
Don't Pay for Nothing
There are scammers out there who will take a deposit and supply you with nothing in return. It's always a risk to choose an individual or company with little reputation or no references; even though you may think it can save you a few dollars. If you must put down a deposit, make sure you get everything in writing and check over the contract carefully.
Time is Money
It is not uncommon to run into delays when ordering custom built furniture. Materials get backordered; builders get swamped—don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit longer than expected. That being said, you should not have to wait an unreasonable amount of time beyond what has been quoted.
An extra week can be understandable if the company keeps you informed on the status and communicates exactly why there is a holdup in production; however, continuous disruptions and delays is a red flag that something is amiss. Again, read your contract carefully.
