There are millions of people who want to quit smoking. They know the problems of smoking but are not able to quit because of the presence of nicotine in tobacco which is highly addictive in nature and works similar to cocaine and other addictive drugs. The body and mind of the smoker get so habitual of the nicotine that without its intake the person becomes restless.
Consequences of smoking
Cigarette, pipe and cigars contains over 300 different harmful chemicals which affect a person’s body and health. Some of these effects are cardiac attack, pregnancy problem, and cancerous growth in the lung, persistent cough, breathing difficulty, chest tightness, and chest pain.
For pregnant women there is a risk of premature birth, miscarriage or SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). According to the statistics 30% of men and 18 % of women smoke and thousands of children below the age of 15 smoke every day, out of which 5% result in death every day due to lung cancer.
Two chronic diseases by smoking are Cancer and Emphysema.
Cancer -There are 11 types of cancer, like bladder cancer, mouth cancer and kidney cancer. Few recent studies have come with the reports that smokers are 25 times more likely to die due to lung cancer as compared to non-smokers.
Emphysema- It is one of the chronic diseases that destroy different parts of lungs and results in hyperventilation, shortness of breath and asthma like attacks.
Smoking Cessation
Smoking is an addiction, unfortunately smoking cessation is difficult but there are few methods which can help you to quit smoking. You are more likely to succeed if you know the risks and if you are prepared to quit.
When you quit smoking there are lots of symptoms that may occur like insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, irritability restlessness and even depression. Many patients have the experience of mild depression also. In case of women they have the fear of weight gain .The reason behind that is when you quit smoking, you simply tend to eat more which result in weight gain. Women may gain between 2 to 5 kg when they quit the first time .Over time it may increase to 10 kg.
