The following questions will help give you a better idea as to the type of treatment you can expect to receive:
• How long have you been practicing cosmetic dentistry? Generally, a dentist’s experience level goes hand-in-hand with the length of time he’s been practicing. The more experience, the better.
• What post-graduate training do you have? The dentists with the highest levels of skill and expertise have all undergone extensive post-graduate training and prestigious dental institutions, and regularly participate in continuing education courses to ensure they remain current on the most advanced techniques.
• What professional organizations are you affiliated with? Make sure your potential cosmetic dentist is a member of some of the more prestigious professional organizations in the field.
• Can I view examples of your work? All quality cosmetic dentists should have before and after photos to show you. This will give you a better idea of the type of results your dentist can deliver.
• Can I have the names and contact information of several past patients who can serve as a reference? If your dentist does not have satisfied patients who are willing to serve as a reference, it should raise a red flag.
• Have you specialized in any particular fields of dentistry? When searching for a primary care dentist to cover all of your general dentistry needs, you want to find someone who has a well-rounded skill set. But if you are seeking more specialized treatment, you may want to find a dentist who has made that type of treatment a primary focus of his practice.
• Have you faced any malpractice allegations? It is best to avoid working with dentists who have faced malpractice charges, for obvious reasons. Would you rather work with a cosmetic dentist who has been charged with negligence one or more times, or a dentist with a clean record?
• Are you a metal free practice? There are many reasons why metal restorations are being phased out. You will generally receive more long lasting, beautiful results with porcelain or composite restorations.
• Do you accept my dental insurance? In tough economic times, cost is unfortunately always a factor in seeking medical treatment. If you have a good dental plan, you may as well find a good dentist who accepts it.
• What other financing options are available to me? Not all dental procedures are covered by insurance. This is particularly true of cosmetic dentistry procedures, which are often considered elective. Make sure your dentist offers several options to fit your desired procedure into your budget.
