If you are thinking if visiting your cosmetic dentist, then there must be something about your smile that you are not happy with.

Which cosmetic treatments are offered?
They are numerous kinds of treatments ranging from tooth whitening procedures to complete smile makeovers. Porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, tooth bonding, dental bridges are a few more that are popular. Some patients will need maybe a teeth whitening while others may need a variety of different procedures to get the smile they deserve. Really, no matter what your mouth looks like, a cosmetic dentist can make you look like a star.

Porcelain veneers are a popular form of cosmetic dentistry today. Basically they are thin shells of dental ceramic that fit on your tooth once it has been prepared. They are stain proof and very durable and give you an instantly beautiful smile. They are not used on the back teeth so usually a minimum of 6 will suffice.

Is sedation available for anxious patients?
Most dentists will say yes. There is a growing need for the patient to feel comfortable in the dentist office. There is a lot going on in the dentist office that can cause discomfort. The sound of the drill or the small confining spaces makes people feel stressed. However a lot is being done to help this. There are two major sedation methods that most dentists will offer if needed.

• Oral Sedation, which is a pill given at the beginning of the visit that gradually takes effect making the patient very calm and comfortable. This type of sedation is good if a lot of work needs to be done at one time. You will need help driving home if you choose this method.

• Nitrous Oxide, which is very much like oral sedation, but it is given through a mask while the patient is in the chair. It takes effect very quickly, but it also wears off faster than the pills. After nitrous, a patient can drive home.

There is a lot being done to help the overall dental experience have a more positive atmosphere. Many offices have fish tanks and running water to make you more relaxed. Some dentists have warm blankets and pillows and fancy chairs to make you comfortable. Wearing headphones with music has also been a very popular approach. And if you are still nervous about visiting the dentist then you can try sedation dentistry.
