Sedation dentistry is the choice for patients with a variety of needs and backgrounds. The treatment provides relaxation that is an attractive alternative to local anesthesia. Patients who have a comfortable experience in the office are more likely to come in for routine visits. Sedation provides benefit for people who experience a range of issues, including:
Pain from sensitive teeth
An uncontrollable gag reflex
A strong dental phobia
Trouble becoming numb
How deep is the sedation?
Sedation is sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry. It is true that some patients fall asleep during a dental procedure but this is not the norm. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are intended to keep the patient awake but relaxed. A deeper relaxation is provided by the choice of IV sedation but this technique administers medication directly into the blood stream.
What is oral sedation like?
Oral sedation requires no needle because it is administered in pill form. The patient is able to respond to the dentist and remain awake. Patients remember very little about their appointment because of the amnesic effect of the medication. The sedation is deeper so many cosmetic procedures such as a smile makeover can benefit from it.
Do dentists still use nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has been in use for many years and is still effective. It is easy to administer, works quickly, and can be adjusted during the treatment. A benefit to nitrous oxide is the ability to drive home without assistance after the appointment.
