What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin pieces of translucent ceramic enamel that closely resemble natural tooth enamel. Your cosmetic dentist custom fits them to your teeth and shapes them to repair damage and restore their original, or an improved, shape. They not only fix damage and improve your appearance they can be shaped to improve the functionality of your bite.
Are porcelain veneers permanent?
Porcelain veneers are one of the most permanent tooth repairs. They can last ten to fifteen years. Like natural teeth they can be damaged if not cared for. Although porcelain veneers are stain resistant they can stain. The glass-like ceramic can chip or crack under sudden pressure, so nail biting and ice chewing are discouraged. As with crowns, they are cemented in place. The cement is considered permanent as with a crown, but they do occasionally detach.
Some porcelain veneers must be maintained permanently because the tooth must be prepared in a way that destroys some of the surface enamel prior to placing the veneer. Others do not require any destruction of the tooth’s natural enamel, and can be removed if you choose to have this done.
Are porcelain veneers painful?
Not usually. Porcelain veneers do not cause pain either during or after placement. People who have sensitive teeth may experience some sensitivity for a short period of time. Others whose teeth enamel is prepared may also experience a short period of sensitivity.
Are porcelain veneers expensive?
The cost for porcelain veneers varies depending upon the brand, your cosmetic dentist costs, the amount of preparation needed, number of appointments and number of veneers you are having placed. They can cost from $700 to $2,000 per tooth, so it is best to talk to your cosmetic dentist to get a more accurate estimate. They may not be covered by insurance, but most dentists can recommend financing options that cover the entire cost.
