Process for Porcelain Veneers |
||||
|
The porcelain veneers process takes place over the length of a few dental appointments. The actual procedure is painless, although you may experience some sensitivity. Your veneers will be customized to suit you, and the color will be matched to that of your natural teeth. |

Determining if you are a Candidate
If you are interested in porcelain veneers, the next step is to find out if you are a candidate for the treatment. Veneers are used to aesthetically improve the appearance of:
Chips and cracks
Stains and discoloration
Teeth that are not the same length or size
Minor gaps
Worn teeth
Misshapen teeth
During your initial consultation, you will discuss your desired outcome. After hearing your expectations, your dentist will be able to determine if veneers will achieve the smile you are looking for. During this visit, your dentist may take x-rays of your mouth.
Veneers are primarily a cosmetic procedure, and you may not be a candidate if you have severe structural issues. For example, patients who grind their teeth at night may wear their teeth down to the point that veneers are not an option. Veneers can restore the shape of worn teeth, but major structural loss will require a restoration like a tooth crown.
Porcelain Veneer Procedure
After your dentist has determined you are a candidate, the next appointment will involve preparation of your teeth for the veneers. During this second appointment:
Your teeth will be prepared for the veneer. The dentist will remove the outer layer of enamel so the veneer can fit over your tooth. If the enamel were not removed, the veneer would look bulky and different from the rest of your teeth.
After the enamel is removed, impressions will be made of your teeth. These impressions will be sent to the lab that makes the veneers, and your custom veneers will be created.
Your dentist will place temporary veneers on your teeth. You may have to wait a few weeks before the permanent veneers are ready.
Once your porcelain veneers arrive at your dentists office, you will go to your third and final appointment. The veneers will be placed over your teeth with a dental cement. The cement is light-activated, so your dentist will shine a special light on the cement.
The porcelain veneer process should not involve any pain. Over-the-counter painkillers, like ibuprofen, are usually sufficient in treating any sensitivity or discomfort you experience.
