Probiotics Versus Antibiotics

At some point in your life, you have probably used antibiotics for something such as an ear infection, sinus infection, tonsillitis, or so many other reasons. We all know antibiotics do some great things like getting rid of painful ear infections, especially if you have a baby with one, we are very grateful to have such antibiotics.

We all know antibiotics do some great things like getting rid of painful ear infections, especially if you have a baby with one, we are very grateful to have such antibiotics. Sometimes people can have symptoms they don’t want due to taking antibiotics such as cramping, diarrhea, or bloating. They may also keep our body from absorbing all the nutrients from our food while it is being digested. Antibiotics are defined as chemotherapeutic agents that inhibit the growth of micro-organisms.

We need antibiotics to kill the disease-causing bacteria in our bodies if we do have any type of infection. While it is killing bacteria, it doesn’t only kill the “bad bacteria”, but it also kills the “good bacteria” which is found in our intestines and colon. This is what causes the diarrhea, cramping, and bloating. When good bacteria are killed, the protective barrier they create breaks down and the bad organisms are allowed to multiply. As a result, the use of antibiotics can increase the susceptibility to certain infections and may lead to a prolonged carrier state. Hospitalized infants that have been given ampicillin have shown an extended outbreak of Salmonella infection. Antibiotics can also lead to the development of resistant bacteria in the colon.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations defines probiotics as “live microorganisms administered in adequate amounts which confer a beneficial health effect on the host”, probiotics which are the “good bacteria”. Probiotics taken while on antibiotics can help with the symptoms of diarrhea, bloating, and cramping because it is putting the good bacteria back into your gut. The good bacteria are responsible for making sure you get all your nutrients from you food and it ensures your immune system is working properly. You can find probiotics in yogurt and many other fermented milk products, you can also take it as a supplement in tablet or capsule form. When our gut is filled with good bacteria, it can get rid of the bad bacteria trying to come in on our food.

Good bacteria also produce vitamin K and vitamin B. Vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting and functions as an antioxidant, and vitamin B is essential for energy production and nervous system function. Since probiotics help keep our digestive tract working properly, they are good for people who are lactose intolerant because the lactic acid bacteria in yogurt and other fermented milk products, deliver lactase to the intestines which helps the body digest lactose, the sugar in milk. Probiotics can also help with inflammatory bowel disease and even boost our immune system. Places such as daycares, farms, and homes with a few children and pets have more microbes than completely sanitary places. Research has shown if kids are exposed to these places at a young age it will boost their immune system development, which means it lowers their chances of having allergies later in life.
