Some dogs, especially those who live outside, dig holes and that hole later become their private sanctuary. But the worst reason could be your dog dig holes in the hopes of escaping confinement. They might want to go beyond what is allowed and safe for them, to explore something new and adventurous. This should be addressed immediately to prevent the dangers of automobiles accidents, unwanted pregnancies, damaging other people's properties and contagious diseases.
Once found out that your dog digs because of boredom or if they find digging entertaining, train him to fig in the sand pit. Digging in the sand pit keeps him from getting too dirty and prevents unsightly holes from appearing in your front lawn. To replace digging as his object of fun and entertainment, toys can be of great help. Provide various toys to entertain them and keep their busy minds working. Extra exercise or increase in play time also helps prevent your Basset Hounds from digging. Getting another dog if you own only one is also great. Just remember to choose one that will get along with your present pet. Surely you don't want more problems just because your pets never get along well.
When your dog digs to escape confinement, measures should be taken to ensure their safety. Fence can be secured by burying concrete or wire mesh under the spot where he is getting out. Others resort to underground fences that give a mild electric shock. These items are available at hardware and pet supply stores. Don't forget to ask for instructions or better yet a demo on the proper use of these items to prevent accidents.
As dog owner, always bear in mind that physical punishment won't work in dealing with your dog's digging behavior. Hitting your dog's rear for every mistake he committed won't solve the problem, same with harsh verbal attacks. These punishments will just lead to more problems instead of solving it.
