The human body is a miraculous machine but the hands are some of the most amazing of the parts. They are used throughout the day to do almost everything. They are used to cook, eat, grab, drive, work and soothe. It would be hard to get through even one hour in a day without using them. We may take them for granted but we should take a moment to be grateful for them and to give them a bit of extra care.

Here are 5 tips to help you care for your hands in order to avoid surgery.

1) Be aware of potentially dangerous situations in using your hands. If you are using a sharp knife during a cooking and chopping project, focus on what you're doing rather than chatting or watching television. Many accidents could be avoided by the simple act of paying attention.

2) Wear gloves. If you are working on a construction project or in the garden, you'll want to protect your hands with a pair of gloves. In a typical building project there are splinters and sharp edges and points that may inadvertently find their way into your flesh without a bit of extra protection. While gardening, gloves protect the hands from pesticides, blistering or sharp objects buried beneath the soil. Bare skin is also prone to bug bites, sunburn, poison ivy or a thorn. Any of these occurrences open the possibility to infection.

3) Avoid repetitive motions. If you are working on something that requires repetitive motion, be sure to take a break periodically to stretch and move in a different manner. An even better idea is to mix up the tasks, doing fifteen minutes of one, and then switching to another before rotating back to the earlier task.

4) If you are beginning to have the symptoms for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which include pain in the hand and wrist area which eventually works its way up into your shoulder, begin to stretch and exercise the areas every day for a minimum of five minutes. It's amazing how effective the simple incorporation of exercise can be to alleviate health problems.

5) Don't use tools that have ready-made indentations for your fingers. People's hands come in so many different sizes and shapes that these indentations will end up rubbing the majority the wrong way. This can cause aches, pains, and calluses that could have easily been avoided.

With just a bit of awareness and forethought, you can take care of your hands in order to avoid the disease and injury that would inevitably lead to surgery.
