Building a Brochure from Scratch
Customizing a brochure to your own tastes can be easy. However, this same idea can also be difficult, especially if you do not have the patience to understand the technicality of uploading templates or design software.
Yes, it does take a while to master design programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, CorelDraw, Quark and more. And the closest thing you did was perhaps to try on the Paint accessory. Do not fret. You need not hire a graphic artist just to make a brochure for you.
Sometimes, all you need is your good head on your shoulders, a few tips, and the right printing company to work with so you can make a design.
Where and How to Design
You can easily make a brochure design using the Microsoft Word Vista and Publisher. But before you head on, think about these things first.
1. Sketch a few ideas and research.
The first thing you should set your mind to when attempting to create your own design is to make studies. These studies are your own concepts that you can build on from scratch before you finally experiment designing it on the computer.
Get to work on at least 3 ideas that you would think fit your message, your company or your brand, and your overall strategy. Do it on paper, do clippings and more.
2. Do not be overly ambitious
If you were to work on a brochure design using Microsoft Word Vista and Publisher, then you know your brochure design would have certain limitations. Start with simple ideas and clean lines.
3. Choose a layout.
Every template that you see or make have certain patterns. These are the layouts that designate. where images or photos go and your texts as well. Think what you would say, how much space your message would consume and what other important details you need to put in. Consider all of this when deciding on a layout and not just because they are pretty.
4. Choose your pictures.
Remember what pictures to put in your layout and where do they have to go. Prepare a set of pictures that do not only look good, but are saved in a CYMK format. To do this, you can simply take the digital picture, open it in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator and convert it to CMYK color mode. Save it and organize all the photos in CMYK mode in a new folder.
This detail is important because printing companies only process CMYK files.
5. Choose a material
In brochure printing, it is common to print brochure on paper that are similar to the thickness of glossies or magazine pages. However, you need not limit yourself to this.
You can print in a number of different materials and sizes. Cover stock is board paper so you would have a thicker, more presentable brochure. You can do a larger brochure that can double up as a folder if you want. But for mailing purposes, you can stick to a 100 lb. gloss cover paper that is the standard.
And so, while many brochure printing and design tricks are out there, these are the most practical things you should remember before embarking head on to designing and printing your brochures.
