The most obvious allergic symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, watery, itchy, red eyes, and itchy ears. The less obvious problems include cough, a tickle in the throat, shortness of breath, asthma, hives, eczema, bee sting reactions, and others. These feelings of discomfort are not only irritating but may lead into future complications if ignored.
There are many practical ways on how to manage allergens in your own home. With these simple prevention tips, a patient’s wellness is easy to achieve.
Dust mites reproduce in pillows, mattresses, sheets, carpeting, stuffed animals and toys. What to do?
1. Use special fabrics impervious to dust mites to cover pillows and mattresses.
2. Wash sheets and blankets in hot water on a weekly basis.
3. Facial masks should be used during unavoidable exposure to allergens such as doing the laundry of these sheets and blankets.
4. As much as possible, keep stuffed toys away from a child suffering sinus allergies.
Maintaining an ideal room for an allergy sufferer can be tedious but it helps knowing the reasons why these usual ways are necessary to forget boredom and tedium in cleaning.
1. Rooms must be cleaned with damp cloth regularly to remove particles that can act as allergens.
2. You may also use a special vacuum that contains filters which are excellent in cleaning the air that comes out from the vacuum cleaner during use.
3. Cover the vents in the bedroom when they are not needed. This helps to lessen the dust that blows into the room.
4. Eliminate carpeting. It only traps everything that creates allergic oasis.
5. Minimize furniture to a wooden or steel bed. Avoid dust catchers like drapes, pictures, and old books displayed in the room.
6. Make sure not to allow cockroaches and other insects inside the room or inside the house. They are major sources of allergen.
Other practical ways to avoid the symptoms of sinus allergies are most of the time difficult. For example, to get rid of pets and stay away from plants and trees can be painstaking in one’s personal life. Avoiding tobacco smokes and chemicals like paint fumes, gasoline, bleaches, insecticides and even perfumes is apparently beyond each person’s control when outdoors.
Nevertheless, medications and treatments are available in addition to the preventive measures cited above:
- Antihistamines for instance, block the action of histamine, which is released when one is exposed to an allergen. Ideally, these should be taken before symptoms occur.
- Decongestant nasal sprays are available, which reduce nasal stuffiness. Varieties of nasal sprays are helpful, but don’t forget the doctor’s recommendation before choosing one.
