New sources of energy, or channeling these sources and making them useful, is the challenge put in front of designers today. There is certainly demand for those who are imaginative, intuitive and have a good sense of the task at hand. What is a power supply unit? Why is power supply design so important?

A power supply unit is a device that supplies electrical energy to one or more electrical loads. Generally speaking, it applies to devices that convert one type or form of electrical energy into another form or type. An electrical power supply is the term used to describe a main power distribution system with any other source of energy. Examples of forms of energy include:

1. Chemical fuel cells and other forms of energy storage systems
2. Batteries
3. Solar power
4. Conversion of one form of electrical power to another form of electrical power or voltage. For example from AC to DC
5. Generators and alternators

Another common form of power supply units are mechanical power supplies. These can include; flywheels together with generator and alternators, compulsators (compensated pulsed alternator), and explosively pumped flux compression generators.

The reason that designs for power supplies are needed is to address the capabilities and limitations of a certain system. These capabilities and limitations need to work around what is expected or demanded of a given system. What are some examples of this? The constraints of a given power supply unit can be the amount of power that it supplies and how long it can supply that power before it requires refueling or recharging. Other factors a designer needs to consider is the stability of the voltage or output currents are under during the different load conditions. Finally, one takes into account whether the system will provide pulses of energy or constant power.

Power supply designers are an art that requires skill and knack for problem solving. Taking into consideration types of energy, demands of the system, limitations of that system and what the system needs to accomplish are all factors in creating a new design. As technology continues to advance, so will the need for new power supply systems. Accommodating the demands of modern day life is what a designer does.
