Pool pumps are purchased based on their horsepower or watts, such that the higher the horse power, the higher is the volume of water and performance. The performance is measured in L/min, where L represents Liters. It is also important to know that no two pumps having identical horsepower also pump the same volume each minute. Hence, looking at the flow rates of the model helps in considering the right choice.
• Choosing a reasonably powerful pump is essential and not too powerful pump should be remembered. This is because it can cause problems as your plumbing and filter are set such that they can handle a flow rate and exceeding this causes expensive problems.
• Buying the right size is highly recommended and this is done rightly by checking the maximum flow rate of the filter. Replacing a pump with similar rating that already exists is the right step, but you can go for a change if you have been specified.
• Another serious consideration is the time taken by the pump to convert whole pool volume. Generally, your pump should turnover your pool volume in less than 6 hours. Filtrations need to run this time so that the salt chlorinators sanitize the pool.
• The electrical costs should be kept in mind so that you save money, but the pump that runs for lesser time consumes more energy/ hour.
The pool supplies manufacturers are many and well respected and renowned for their products. The plus point is that almost all the pool motors and pumps are the same as there are not many inventions on pump technology. However, each pump is different in its shape, hydraulics, lid, colors and basket. The difference is that there are low and high head-pumps such that the low head pumps are used above ground pools and the high head and medium head are for inground pools.
Pools below 10,000 gallons should use low head-pump, while pools ranging from 10000 to 20000 gallons can prefer medium head-pump and the others can use ultra high head-pumps. So select pumps close to original specs and use flow charts.
