Plastic surgery is any form of surgery that entails having to reconstruct and improve the appearance of a person. It is not limited to the face and can be performed on any other part of the body by specialists. There are a lot of questions that some interested people might like to ask but are shy to ask these to their doctors. Some of these questions are addressed here.

Is There a Lot of Pain Involved?

This question is one of the most common that occurs in the minds of prospective patients. The answer to this is yes there should be but the patient usually does not feel it because of the influence of anesthesia during the operation and pain killers after. Even during the recovery period, the surgeon prescribes pain relievers to alleviate pain and discomfort that is to be expected.

How Old Should I be to have it done?

A lot of teenagers ask this question because they are not quite satisfied with the way they look. Many doctors are actually hesitant to operate on very young individuals unless they really are in need of reconstructive surgery. If it is for the sake of beauty, doctors often recommend waiting until they have fully grown and reached their potential before consenting to plastic surgery. The concept behind this is the ugly duckling concept where the growing up period may be awkward and sometimes embarrassing but really necessary to be able to see the end result. Parents' permission is needed before a minor can undergo any procedure so there has to be some form of agreement between the child and the parents.

Do I Have to Stay in the Hospital After the Operation?

Many cases of plastic surgery are minor operations and patients are encouraged to go home after a few hours, however some of the more extensive procedures may require the patient to stay overnight or longer. Some complications, during or after the procedure, can also prompt the surgeon to suggest an overnight stay to monitor the patient better. It is best to take the doctor's advice regarding this matter.

Is the Operation Covered by Insurance?

Many insurance companies do not cover cosmetic procedures especially if these are done for the sake of vanity. Reconstructive operations may have a chance of being covered fully or partially if they really necessary for the full physical functionality of the person. On the other hand, some insurance companies might consider some of the forms of plastic surgery as necessary so it is dependent on the insurer.
