People generally follow a consistent pattern of steps before undergoing any cosmetic surgery procedure. You first identify an aesthetic issue that you'd like to be addressed. Then you can begin some independent research via internet or by asking friends and acquaintances, generating ideas on potential cosmetic procedures, costs, risks and plastic surgeons. Financing can then be established; time taken off work, and finally you are ready to pick a plastic surgeon.

Unfortunately, patience and time is necessary to choose the best possible plastic surgeon to perform the procedure. Many people are so excited to undergo plastic surgery that they are not willing to take the time to visit with multiple surgeons or wait long periods to get a consultation (and then even longer for an actual surgery date).

Hastily choosing a surgeon will not only raise the potential to suffer complications during or post-surgery, but will also increase the chance of disappointment with the results. When you commit to undergoing a plastic surgery procedure, prepare yourself to wait anywhere from six months to one year before actually going into surgery. Many surgeons have long-waiting periods not only for consultations but for the actual surgery dates as well.

When making appointments for consultations, it is helpful to request you be alerted if anyone makes a cancellation so you can potentially get an earlier date. It is important to consult with three to four plastic surgeons before making your decision. Consulting with only one or two will limit your perspective, and seeing too many surgeons may only confuse you and make the decision too difficult. Choose your top choices and if none of those are suitable, you can always consult with more.

A few surgeons charge a small consultation fee, which is generally anywhere from 25 to 100 dollars, but many provide consultations free of charge. Those that do charge should apply the fee towards the surgery cost if you choose them as your surgeon. When attending your appointment, dress in comfortable, loose fitting clothing as you may have to remove them in order for your surgeon to examine you (depending on the type of cosmetic surgery you have chosen to undergo).

If you're having a facial procedure performed, it is often better to wear minimal or no makeup and have something that you can use to pull your hair away from your face so the surgeon can give you the most accurate assessment possible. It is normal for photos to be taken as well at this point. Your surgeon may want to use your before and after photos for his portfolio, but you can request your face or eyes to be blurred in order to remain anonymous.

After the surgeon discusses your personal goals and gives you an examination, he should discuss the procedure in detail and what steps will be necessary to achieve the desired results, the recovery process, and all potential risks and complications. He should allow you ample time for questions and answer all thoroughly. When asked, he should be able to provide a portfolio of before and after photos of recent patients, references, and any other credentials you may wish to see.

Ultimately, the plastic surgeon you choose should make you feel comfortable and confident with his abilities, aesthetic vision, and experience. There are many highly qualified plastic surgeons available, so there is no need to ever settle for someone less than ideal.
