Plastic surgery procedures are a highly effective method of correcting the effects resulting from massive weight loss. These cosmetic procedures are particularly important as the result of the dramatic rate of obesity within the United States.

This was demonstrated by a study, released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which found that while no state had a rate of obesity greater than or equal to 15% in 1990, two states exceeded an obesity rate of 30% in the year 2006, and only four states reported an obesity rate of less than 40% during this same year.

This increase parallels the number of patients that underwent a plastic surgery to relieve the effects caused by massive weight loss. Indeed, the number of such plastic surgeries that were performed to undo the effects of massive weight loss increased by 450% between 1988 and 2002.

It must be noted that plastic surgeries performed after massive weight loss, are not done to cause further weight loss, but to provide a trimmer, shapelier look for the patient. To be more specific, these procedures help to remove loose skin for a more elastic, firmer appearance.

Three cosmetic operations which are able to treat the effects of massive weight loss include the body lift, the thigh lift and the arm lift. The body lift is often accompanied by an arm lift. An arm lift may be combined with other body and facial procedures, while both body and thigh lifts can be done in conjunction with an abdominoplasty and/or a liposuction.

When selecting a surgeon, you should look for a plastic surgery expert with extensive experience in all of these procedures. You should also look for board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).

During consultation, the surgeon should take the time to carefully evaluate your individual situation and help you decide which surgeries are required to create the resulting shape you wish for. Body contouring after massive weight loss can include multiple procedures, some of which discussed are body, arm and thigh lift.

Your surgeon may be able to hide the scars connected with these three surgeries by properly placing the incisions. In the case of an arm lift, an incision on the posterior aspect of the upper arm, which extends from the elbow to the armpit, is usually best at concealing the scar. The incision for an inner thigh procedure, placed within the groin crease, and the incision for an outer thigh procedure, placed across the top of the buttocks, are usually the considered incision placements.

Usually, patients may resume nonphysical activity in one to two weeks, and slowly resume physical exercise in four to six weeks, following either a body or thigh lift. In contrast, patients undergoing an arm lift may resume nonphysical activities after a few days and may resume physical exercise in roughly 2 weeks.
