The backwaters of Kerala are network of brackish lakes and lagoons flowing parallel to coastal water body. The Arabian Sea touches the coastline of Kerala. This coastline is popularly known as Malabar Coast. The Kerala backwaters consist of five huge lakes connected by canals, both natural and manmade. The water comes from the various rivers, around 38, flowing across the length and breadth of the state. Backwaters of Kerala are natural formation created with formation of waves and sea currents. These shore currents hits the mouths of the rivers flowing from the Western Ghats.
This amazing network of water bodies like canals, lakes and rivers runs about 900 kilometers. The interconnected water maze has many cities and towns connecting at both ends. This ten-day festival has prayers ceremony, family dining and a host of entertainment activities. The Snake boat race of Kerala is the first picture that comes to mind when you say Onam. These boat races are organized in the Kerala backwaters. The snake boats, known as Chundan Vallams, are narrow boats and length is about 100 feet. These boats were used to transport warriors during wars but with the passage of time, the purpose has changed. Vallam Kali or boat race is organized in the backwaters with hundreds gathered on the banks to cheer and shout. Though all parts of the backwaters organize the boating sport, the boat races are commonly held in Alappuzha, in the Punnamada Lake. Another popular race event in the Kerala backwaters is the Thazhathangadi race. This race is organized on Meenachil River. Some more popular water sporting event in the backwaters are Payippad Jalotsavam, Champakulam Moolam Boat Race, Kumarakom Boat Race and Indira Gandhi Boat Race. The winners of the boat race are given a trophy and the Nehru tyrophy is the most prestigious one.
Tourists throng in large numbers to watch the famous Kerala boat races. There are special tours and packages organized by tour and travel companies during these events. Backwater tours are also organized for Kerala Matrimony receptions and parties associated with the wedding.
