The life, the history, the pages of a family’s history is captured instantaneously with photographs. From the aged black and whites to today’s digital prints, the evolution of picture taking has grown and changed dramatically over the course of a decade. Additionally, the art of displaying photographs and using photographic images in day to day life has developed from pictures on the shelf or hanging on the wall into an industry that touches an overwhelming variety of retail business.

Photography from the 1800’s to today

The first photo images or uses of chemical photography date back to the 1820’s and over the next century evolved from black and white photos to color photography and eventually autochrome in the early 1900’s. Kodachrome and instant color film followed in the mid-1900’s introduced by Polaroid and becoming an instant success. 35mm reload film cameras soon were upstaged by the onset of digital point and shoot cameras and film cameras are all but obsolete by major manufactures such as Kodak, Nikon and Canon.

Displaying photos takes on a more personal approach

The art of displaying photos is widespread and continues to expand. Not just for commercial advertising, photos are used in science and technology as well as a variety of art mediums such as fashion photography and wildlife photography. The use of images and pictures has stepped over into the jewelry industry and pendants and keychains can be engraved with near perfect replicas of digital images and worn as an everyday accessory or as a memorial to those that have passed away. In addition to this type of wearable photography, decorating and accessorizing the home with goods such as digital frames that display a stream of pictures , personalized calendars with multiple family pictures for each, even digital images that are transferred to canvas for display lets consumers tell a silent story of individual and family moments that is versatile and unique.

Newer technology and digital cameras means photos can be displayed in a myriad of ways such as:

· A tribute engraved onto the surface of a jewelry pendant
· Digital photo frames and personalized products such as calendars, mouse pads and housewares
· Canvas art that has transferred digital images of family pictures or personal portraits

The evolution of photography in modern day times has exploded into retail industries across the market. Where historically pictures were used to document family history or provide home décor on end tables and walls, the onset of digital photography and digital cameras has changed the way consumers approach picture displaying. The ease and flexibility in which pictures can be instantly enhanced and manipulated has caused industries such as fashion and jewelry, magazine and newspapers and even the medical industries to explode with new ideas and new ways to capture the consumer’s interest and their money.
