Piano Lessons Equal To Smarter Kids!

Starting your children in piano lessons can develop a lifetime of musical talent and can provide structure outside of school. But it can also be a way to actually increase their IQs, according to a recent study.

The report, conducted by E. Glenn Schellenberg of the University of Toronto at Mississauga, studied the effects of music or voice lessons on young children over a nine month period. He used four groups of 6-year-olds as part of his study, the first enrolled in weekly piano lessons, the second group took vocal lessons, the third took a drama class, and the fourth group was not enrolled in any extracurricular activities. All the music participants were taught at Canada's Royal Conservatory of Music.

Before the study began, all of the children had their IQs tested with a full three-hour intelligence test. All of the students then began first grade, and the three designated groups started their weekly lessons. At the end of the year, they all took the exact same IQ test, however, the results that came out were nevertheless pretty interesting.

On average, all of the children experienced at least a 4.3 point increase in IQ, mainly due to the effects of their learning in school. The kids enrolled in drama class showed no statistical difference in improvement over those in no outside classes, but those in the music classes actually averaged an extra increase of 2.7 points on average than the children in the other two groups.

According to study author Schellenberg, what causes taking music lessons a motivating factor for increased IQ effect, is that any music lessons have many multidimensional facets involved in learning and getting mastery over them. Such as learning about chords, music interval, expressing emotion, memorizing. It is this multidimensional nature of music that exercises the kids brains.

So if you start your kids into piano lessons now (it's never too late, but the sooner the easier it is for your tots to grasp), you could see an extra growth in their thinking and reasoning skills by the beginning of next year. But don't just enroll them into any random music or piano class available around the corner of your street.

It is important to select a teacher for your children who will teach all the fundamental basics, involving different facts of music theory and technique rather than someone who will simply teach them to play simple songs.

Helping them to consistently practice outside of piano lessons will also be important for the success of their skills and their growth in IQ. This means instilling discipline in them and urging your kids to practice a different tune that they fancy. Creativity blooms when you give them space.

Unfortunately, this IQ increasing effect does not work for adults, according to Schellenberg. It works best with young, growing, and impressionable minds. So what better reason to get your kids learning to play the piano right now!
