There is a lot of complex geometry and science involved behind the functioning of an image stitching software and the algorithm that it uses to identify the overlapping pieces and then stitch the picture. Rectilinear projection and cylindrical projection are two commonly used methods for this purpose. Popular image stitching software includes the likes of Autostitch, Hugin, Panorama Maker, Ptgui, Panorama Tools, Microsoft Research Image Composite Editor, and CleVR Stitcher. Professional editors are known to use Adobe Systems' Photoshop for multiple photo stitching. Since this is useful software, Auto Blend has been launched as its upgraded version. The new application is also excellent choice for merging and stitching photos seamlessly.
All of this software is commercially available without any free or open source version. This software is known to be complicated with an advanced user interface. Thus it is recommended that a professional in this field must carry out these jobs.
The job of image stitching is not an easy one and requires a lot of expertise and time. There are many challenges associated with the process of image stitching. Most software uses the blind stitching or auto stitching methods. These methods are known to produce imperfect results owing to the fact that they ignore changes and differences in various aspects of the partial component pictures. Image stitching becomes a tough job in case the pictures include a moving object which might be or might not be present in the other component pictures of the job. This problem happens due to the difference in time frame of clicking the different pictures.
Possible resolution to this problem is by using a manual stitching procedure for the picture stitching. Such a procedure involves manually demarcating the overlapping segments of the pictures thus helping the system identify them as per your own choice. It is preferable to use a large format camera with the same lens for all the component pictures of an image stitching job. The photographer must ensure that there are no moving objects in the picture and that there are clear demarcated common overlapping areas in all the pictures. Also ensuring that the exposure and other aspects of a photograph are similar will greatly assist the job of the person who is carrying out the image stitching. This will ensure better results when you are using the auto stitch method of the software.
