Personal Security : Avoid Becoming A Victim Of Crime |
||||
|
For the last two weeks, when I pick up the local newspaper the front page has featured a story about the latest purse snatching victim. The stories are all similar in that the victim is female (I hope men aren’t carrying purses!) and usually elderly but not always. |

In my instance, however, I chose to seek out ways to protect my personal security and prevent ever becoming a victim again. I did not care for the feeling of helplessness and I certainly didn’t care for the weeks and months that I worried that my personal and private information was out there somewhere or that maybe the assailant might show up at my home any day or any time. It was this fear that pushed me into taking action to protect myself and my personal security, and I hope it is this same fear that causes you to take action and precautions as well. Maybe you have never been a victim, and if not, I hope that you never will be. But statistics are showing that more and more petty crimes are being committed as the economy continues to worsen.
A personal security device such as a key chain pepper spray costs around $10-$15 dollars for the smaller model. The cost of the lost of my purse was quite a bit more as I had $100 after just coming from the bank. A replacement driver’s license alone was $10 and that cost may have increased by now. Then there was all the time and materials needed to call, write and get replacement cards, bank accounts, nursing license in my case, etc. In all, I would say the replacement costs ran around $200-$250 which is a far cry from the $10 for a pepper spray or personal alarm. But a few years ago, I was like so many other people who felt it could never happen to me. Well, I’m now here to tell you it can happen to you and when it does, it is fast, quick and devastating.
Personal protection companies understand what it feels like to be victimized and try to carry a variety of personal security devices to meet each persons needs and prevent them from becoming the “next victim.” My personal favorite is the electronic whistle. It can fasten on your key chain and the moment, you feel in danger, you can put it into action and 120dB can draw attention in a real hurry. Criminals do not like attention and will frequently drop the crime at hand and get as far away as possible. A second favorite is the key chain pepper spray which I carry in my hand whenever in a parking lot or public place which could present the possibility of attack. Each of these choices are very economical and easy to use.
I wrote this so I could share my experiences with others in the hope a purse snatching is not in your future. But I can only write the article. I cannot make you read it, or take action-that is up to you. If you are serious about your personal security than you will take action and obtain a personal security device that meets your needs. Once you do talk to your friends and urge them to do the same. No one needs to be the next victim!
