Most of us have experienced automobile accidents at some point of our life. It is important to know what needs to be done if you are involved in an auto accident. Even if you are not injured, there are certain things that you should and should not do . If you are involved in personal injury litigation arising from a car accident, due to the legal complexities involved in the process, you will greatly benefit from consulting a personal injury lawyer. Here are some of the steps you can take if you are involved in an auto accident:

1) At the scene
If you are involved in an auto accident involving injury or damage to your property, stay at the accident scene until the police arrive. Do not leave the scene of the auto accident until you are told by the cops. If you leave the scenes when the law requires you to wait for the police, it can result in driver's license sanctions and even criminal charges.

2) Safeguard the Injured:
If somebody is injured, and you are trained for first aid, try to help the injured. Do not move an injured person. Have somebody call the police to report the car accident. The person who contacts the police should inform them of injuries. If possible also provide the number of injured persons, so that enough emergency personnel can respond to the scene. If you are on the roadway, turn your emergency lights on or use flares to warn approaching traffic of the accident.

3) Obtain Information:
If you are involved in an auto accident, you should obtain the following information about the other driver:

a) Name, address, driver's license number, insurance information, and license plate number.
b) If there is a witness then you should also gather the following information regarding that witness:
Witness name, address, and telephone number.
c) The location: You may wish to take notes about where the accident occurred, the time of the accident, the road conditions, speed limits, traffic control devices, the weather, and the lighting.
d) The accident: You may wish to take notes about how the accident occurred, such as the direction of travel of the vehicles involved in the accident, and what the cars were doing at the time of the collision. Be aware that if litigation results from the accident, you may have to share your notes with somebody that you are suing, or somebody who is suing you.

4) Do Not Admit Fault:
Even if you think you are at fault, do not admit liability. There may be factors which you don't know, which played a role in the accident, and it may turn out that the other driver was more at fault than you. Do not make statements to anybody at the accident scene, except for the police. When you speak to the police, tell them only the facts of what happened. Let the officers draw their own conclusion from the facts.

Due to the large number of cars on the roads, automobile accidents are a fact of life. If you are ever involved in a car accident, the best thing to do is to stay calm and not lose composure. If there is personal injury involved, call the police or dial 911 so that help can arrive at the scene. If you are involved in a personal injury lawsuit, remember that a qualified personal injury attorney will greatly benefit you
