The skin tissues do not absorb the equivalent light energy which passed through it before getting to the hair follicles that absorbed it because the laser is regulated to be as close as it can be to the absorption coefficient of the intended chromophore which is the hair follicle. The absorption coefficient of the hair follicles and the skin tissues is basically different because of the color of the hair follicle and the skin tissue.
In general, if the color of the skin and that of the hair follicle is the same then the light energy from the laser device would be absorbed by both the skin and the hair follicles causing both the desired effect on the hair follicles and an unwanted damage to the skin tissues . The later is regarded as a collateral thermal damage.
Presently, those who have blond or gray hair cannot possibly have laser hair removal treatment, this is because the color difference between the skin and hair follicles is very negligible .
Initially, people with very light skin tone and dark hairs were the only ones able to receive this treatment. These days however, even people with dark skin tones can now enjoy this treatment. Note that not everyone can still enjoy this treatment courtesy of the Nd:YAG laser. This is one of the main downsides to laser hair removal.
Those who have dark or brown hair can still have this treatment. Achieving this however requires that you consult with a laser hair removal specialist who would know the best treatment to use.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Most of the side effects recorded are very mild and usually disappear after some hours. A number of aftermath are that the treated area would experience a little swelling, tenderness, change of color and sometimes inflammation. The aftermaths are short lived.
To reduce the aftermath to the lowest level, make sure your treatment is administered by a hair removal specialist. Some people who have had quacks treat them have reported some more severe side effects including infections.
It is best for you to always consult a specialist.
