Performance Ratings for the NFL should be based on in-game stats not on subjective or math - not subjective material or opinion |

Admittedly, math is a funny factor. You would think that it would supply a cut-and-dry, inarguable analysis of a team’s performance, but more often than not, math fires up controversy among fans, broadcasters and even coaches. Football is a game of emotion, and few people like to take it to the level of pure mathematics. However, sometimes the numbers just can’t lie.
For example, let’s take a look at the San Francisco Forty-Niners. When evaluating this team after Week 2 of the season, PossessionPoints.com labeled them as the worst 2-0 team in the league. Yes, this assessment was held by very few other experts. In fact, many in the media fell in love with this team and talked about their rise to glory. However, San Francisco proved that they were indeed the worst 2-0 team, and their record of 2-3 now proves that. Well, in fairness, some teams have been known to make a turnaround, but usually a team needs something positive to build on for that to happen, and San Francisco has very little in the building blocks department.
Another example is the Philadelphia Eagles. So many Performance Ratings have the Eagles at the bottom of the pile, but again using the math, PossessionPoints came up with another controversial rating and ranked the Eagles sixth. How can that be? Well, using the PossessionPoints stat, the Eagles have shown an exemplary defense which has allowed a more creative offense to flourish or at least start to flourish. The defeats the Eagles experienced were mostly due to glitches in their special teams which in the mathematical scheme of things have no effect on offensive possessions. So, time will either be a friend or enemy of the Eagles. Only time will tell, whether their record will catch up with their performance or whether their performance will degrade to a level in line with their record. Either way, something has got to give.
