Every parent should know that what a child eats, directly affects their oral health. Substances such as sugars and starches that are commonly found in snack foods are prime examples of tooth decay causes. Combine this information with the fact that children’s teeth are often harder to clean and maintain than adults, and it’s no surprise how debris and food can remain within a child’s mouth for an elongated period of time.
And even though a child’s first set of teeth will ultimately be replaced by their permanent set, proper care and maintenance of baby teeth is imperative to their development and health.
Some children are born with teeth which develop within the first month of life. These will require immediate removal unless the parents decide to make a point of maintaining the child’s oral hygiene. Even if only one tooth is apparent, it will always require a good cleaning day to day.
Teething begins from around 6 months of age, through the first 24 months. Symptoms include excessive biting, irritability, and drooling. Parents can help children to better deal with the process through massaging the gums, providing teething rings, and requesting ointment from their pediatrician.
Teeth Cleaning – As stated above, all baby teeth should be cleaned from the moment they are apparent. Parents should take the time to clean the mouth with a washcloth or gauze after each meal, adding a brush to the equation once multiples arrive.
Children require only a minimal amount of toothpast, and fluoride should be avoided until the child has reached at least 6 months of age. You pediatrician can help to teach your child to brush properly once they are old enough to do so.
Scheduling An Appointment – Once you have decided it’s time to visit your pediatrician, you will need to find one, if you have not done so already. Ask other parents or family members for recommendations. Additionally, you can speak with your child’s primary care pediatrician for referrals. Take the time to research and choose the one you feel the most comfortable with. It is generally recommended that children attend their first visit by age one in order to evaluate their condition and establish a treatment plan. Parents should make the effort to speak with the dentist in order to ensure all instructions are followed closely for the best results possible.
