Pedestrian Accidents

Crossing the street or simply walking along side it can become an exercise in danger. High traffic urban centers become places where pedestrian accidents are more likely to happen, leading to serious personal injuries and even death.

Almost everyone has been told at one point or another in their youth to look both ways before crossing the street – even if the street light says “Go.” This carries over into adulthood and many begin to take it for granted that the cars around them will stop.

Pedestrians often have the right of way, but speeding, inattentive, or intoxicated drivers can ruin a good day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most pedestrian accidents occur in the mid to late afternoon, and many of the victims of pedestrian accidents are children returning home from school.

Common pedestrian accidents include:

Pedestrians traveling with traffic
Pedestrians crossing in the middle of the block (jaywalking)
Vehicle backing into pedestrian
Vehicle turning into pedestrian

Every year there are nearly 70,000 people hit by vehicles every year in the U.S. Around 5,000 of these pedestrian accident victims die. The rate of death is less than two per 100,000 people, but the number of seriously injured is much higher. Injuries are a result of direct impact with the vehicle, but can also occur when the victim hits the ground. Injuries that occur in pedestrian accidents include:

Traumatic brain injuries
Spinal cord injuries
Broken bones
Internal injuries
Disfigurement

All drivers should practice defensive driving, especially in areas where there are many pedestrians, around schools, and as the sun is on the horizon. However, as pedestrians, people need to watch for vehicles around them. Still, if you have been seriously injured in a pedestrian accident, you may be eligible for compensation to pay medical bills, past and future wages, pain and suffering and more.
