Almost everyone has been told at one point or another in their youth to look both ways before crossing the street – even if the street light says “Go.” This carries over into adulthood and many begin to take it for granted that the cars around them will stop.

The rate of death is less than two per 100,000 people, but the number of seriously injured is much higher. Injuries are a result of direct impact with the vehicle, but can also occur when the victim hits the ground. Injuries that occur in pedestrian accidents include:

Traumatic brain injuries
Spinal cord injuries
Broken bones
Internal injuries
Disfigurement

All drivers should practice defensive driving, especially in areas where there are many pedestrians, around schools, and as the sun is on the horizon. However, as pedestrians, people need to watch for vehicles around them.
