Historically speaking, Parol is derived from the Spanish term, parol which means lantern. But on the Philippine record, it is called as, “ilawan”. This is also known as paper lantern, because this can be made by crepe paper or Japanese paper and illuminated with a candle to make it more presentable and that brilliant, even during evening. parolare ornamental star-like that are made of bamboo sticks. Its shape was inspired from Francisco Estanislao paper lantern, which has five-pointed star-shape way back 1928.
As of now, even our national institutions, schools, malls, the other establishments and most especially churches do make use of this pattern, but with modernize materials. Some use several beads and other still with those indigenous materials. Materials may vary, but the structures of the Parolare still with that first one made historically. They preserve this to remind us the light that guided the magi to where Jesus Christ was born to bring gifts and praise His birth. That Parol light is very symbolic for us to commemorate the birth of our dear Jesus Christ and together celebrate with joy that He is born in our lives.
All over the globe, these Parols are can be seen and made differently in style, taste and beau, depending on the customary of a certain place. Some places they have also their competition for the beautiful lights and biggest Parol, for the judges for the said competition are the young ones. Parols may be in different sizes, materials, or looks, as well, but all Parols are in one definition of the importance of how our Jesus Christ was born and that real, to all of us. If I were to be asked of what the Parol shape would be, it will be the HEART shape. Why?
