Outlook Repair - MS Outlook offers two choices while configuring it for the first time, the Internet Mail Only (IMO) Mode and the Corporate Workgroup Mode. Since MS Outlook is an e-mail client, the two modes basically further assist in the connection of Outlook to the host. The machine tries to determine which mode is right, depending on the configuration etc. When in doubt, always select the Help or About option. IMO mode is more suitable for those who want to access POP3 mails, IMAP etc, While Corporate Workgroup is more suitable for those wanting to use an exchange server.

While installing Outlook in either mode, you might come across the following error:

“The operation failed. An object could not be found.”

When in the IMO mode, this error is seen mostly while trying to delete or relocate a personal folder from the folder list. In the Corporate Workgroup mode, it is seen when trying to displace the personal folder from the profile.

There could be numerous reasons for this problem:
1-Damage to the folder list: This is a list which shows you all the various sub-folders available in your mail box. You can find your way through this list to get to whichever folder you wish.
2-The Personal Folder does not point to a valid PST file.

As with every problem, this one too has a solution. Infact, this problem has two solutions! However neither of them are completely secure. They could cause further damage to the PST file by causing PST corruption. One should use them only in extreme cases when you need to repair Outlook PST.

The first method which could lead to more trouble, is to simply re-install the application. As most of us know, many of us do, re-installing an application which is giving trouble is one of the easiest solutions!!! This just undoes whatever damage was done and starts afresh. This is the advantage and problem with this method. Advantage is obvious, problem or dis-advantage because this method also means that all the data on that old application is lost!!

The other option is to make changes to the registry of the system. This could be problematic and should be avoided as far as possible. However in the extreme case when you have no choice but to try this, you need to find the following registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging\Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings\
Then search for the registry key that contains the old .pst and delete it.

The corruption of any PST file means many important e-mails, contacts and other Outlook information could be lost for good.
