Otoplasty: The Safest Way To Shape Your Ears

Otoplasty can be done at any age provided the ears have grown fully. But definitely the opinion of an experienced plastic surgeon is needed.

Otoplasty is procedure that has been performed for decades. Simply put, it is plastic surgery done on the ears. Many times this is to correct the problem of ears protruding too much from the head, but it can also mean correcting deformities, or simply reshaping them.

The procedure is often safely performed on young children in the case of deformities, and is performed regularly on adolescents and adults for cosmetic reasons. If you think that you may be a candidate for this type of procedure, you want to consider your options carefully, and educate yourself so that you can be involved in the process from beginning to end.

Making the Decision

If you have an ear deformity that has not yet been corrected, then your reason for wanting otoplasty is obvious. If you simply don't like the way that your ears look, however, then you probably want to give the surgery a little more consideration.

Take an honest inventory of how long you have felt this way about the way they look, and if any recent circumstances in your life have affected your self-esteem. Talk it over with someone you trust whom you can also count on to be objective when it comes to how you feel about your ears. The final decision is yours, but you want to make it wisely.

The Surgery

If you've decided that you definitely want to go through with the Otoplasty procedure, it's good to be aware of what will happen during the surgery. It's your body, and you should always know what is being done to it. How the surgery will proceed depends on what needs to be done, of course.

If it's being done to correct over-protrusion, an incision is made at the back of the ear where the scar is unlikely to be seen, and the ear is sutured in a way that pulls it closer to the head. Other procedures may involve sculpting different parts of the ear.

The surgery usually isn't long in duration, and is most often done using a local anesthetic instead of a general. Exceptions would be extensive corrective surgery, and surgery done on small children. Always ask the surgeon to describe to you exactly what is going to be done during your or your child's particular procedure.

Recovery

What you do during the recovery period after otoplasty is mostly common sense. Keep the area clean, keep it dry for at least a few days, and keep any lotions or hair products away from the suture area. Get plenty of rest so your body has the energy it needs to heal quickly and efficiently, and follow all of your doctor's post-surgery instructions.

Otoplasty can make a big difference in how your ears look, which in turn can make a difference in the way you look and feel overall. If you approach it responsibly, you'll be sure to have the best results possible.
