When and where was otoplasty developed? Sushruta lived in ancient India (circa 600 BC) and is reputed to have reconstructed ears that were amputated as punishment for crimes. He and his students developed techniques that form the basis of today’s surgical procedures.
Who performs these surgeries? Surgeons that perform these types of surgery are oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons or ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons. It isn’t necessary to go to a specialist to get good results. Many general plastic surgeons have a lot of experience with positive results.
What is involved in the process? All types of otoplasty involve some sort of anesthesia. Depending on the cooperativity of the patient and extent of the procedure, local anesthetic with sedation or general anesthetic may be chosen. The total operating time may be between one and five hours. There are different types of procedures used to correct different problems. Incisions may be made along one side of the cartilage to give access to the structures being reshaped. "Ear pinning” is often done with only retention stitches to hold the pinna in its’ new position.
Ear reduction incisions are typically hidden near folds in the front. Fixing small or missing ears involves the addition of titanium screws or extensive cartilage rib grafts.
How long does recovery typically take? Many operations are typically performed as outpatient, while a few many require stay overnight in the hospital. Children often require a week off from school to recover. Adults may get back to their normal activities within a few days. Total healing time can take up to 6 weeks, but results of the surgery are visible as soon as the bandages are removed.
How much does it cost? Otoplasty can range from $2,000 to $5,0000 depending on the extent of surgery required and experience of the doctor. There are many financing opportunities available.
