The layout of a design is about communication. When you are creating a design you need to keep in mind exactly what you are trying to communicate to the person viewing it. The arrangement and presentation of text and images can aid or hinder effective communication. One key aspect of a design layout is providing visual cues that give the reader direction. These cues break up text and images into readable, easy to follow blocks or panels of information.

Tips on organizing your layout:

* Artwork : The first things people see on a page are the visuals. It is important to choose images and their placement carefully. They will provide immediate information about the document, its purpose and its organization. However too many visuals can cause a design to look disorganized or sloppy, so use them in moderation.

* Titles : Most of the time headlines and titles are larger and more prominent than other text. This visual cue will signal the beginning of a segment and give the reader initial direction.

* Paragraph Emphasis and Organization : Solid blocks of text are often times difficult to read. You may want to break up your text using visual indicators to show where paragraphs start and begin. If you are trying to emphasize a particular section of text you may try using formatting techniques such as frames, bullets, and reversed text.

* Character Emphasis : If you need to draw emphasis to certain words or phrases within a body of text you may want to use bold or italics . This is one way of letting readers know what information is important.
