Unfortunately insulated printed mugs are a little bit more expensive than normal mugs, and thus you will end up spending more money on an insulated printed mug than you would on a normal printed mug. Believe it or not this actually works to your advantage.
You see, because insulated mugs are more expensive than normal printed mugs consumers are more likely to hang on to your printed mug if it is insulated than if it were not insulated due to the fact that they would rather use and insulated printed mug that is free, versus a normal mug that they would have to pay for. It really all boils down to the fact that people are cheap and do not want to spend more money than they have to, so if they are given a printed mug that adds added value they are more likely to keep that item around and use it on a daily basis.
When designing an insulated printed mug there are only two form factors to be concerned about. Do you want to make a standard style mug, or a traveling mug? Both work equally as well, however one well definitely be more popular among consumers. An insulated traveling printed mug will be the clear winner in consumers hearts and minds. Traveling mugs are expensive, especially insulated ones, and most people do not own more than one. Thus if you give them a printed mug that is insulated and has a shape that can fit into most car cup holders you will not only be earning goodwill towards your company, but you will also be ensuring that the customer sticks with your printed mug for a long time.
Because people are going to be using your printed mugs for a long time you probably want to design it with longevity in mind. Keeping this in mind metal is the clear winner here for durability; no plastic is not necessarily a horrible option either. In fact for some situations plastic may actually be the material of choice. Metal is more expensive than plastic, a simple fact, so if you are worried about the costs associated with producing an insulated printed mug you may want to cut corners by choosing plastic over metal.
After all you are already spending more creating an insulated mug you may not want to spend even more creating a metal mug. Plastic is also easier to attach your brand or logo to.
