Oilers’ goaltender Jussi Markkanen who hadn’t seen game action since March, gave his best along with the team’s defense players to avoid Carolina Hurricanes to score. Markkanen finished last Saturday night with 24 stops. Final result was 2 – 1 that represented not just a victory for the Oilers but the return to the competition for the Stanley Cup after two loses.
As Oilers’ head coach Craig MacTavish affirmed, his team spent a lot of time in the Hurricanes’ zone during the first half of the game, also said they had more players in the right position and above the puck than Carolina. The Oilers blocked 13 shots on Saturday, after managing only seven in Game 2. Captain Jason Smith led the way with four.
Ryan Smyth managed his game with a strategy to score with 2:15 remaining. He drove to the net and beat Cam Ward when the puck bounced off his body and in. The Hurricanes felt Smyth interfered with Ward on the play, but a review upheld the initial call.
NHL director of officiating Stephen Walkom said about the play: “Actually the puck was in the air. Smyth tried to knock the puck out of the air with his stick, and at the same time, Ward tried to knock the puck out of the air, was successful in doing so, it bounced off Smyth."
The Edmonton Oilers were also successful on face-offs on Saturday, since they won 28 of the 48 total draws. Horcoff (11-of-18) and Michael Peca (15- of-21) led the way, while Carolina-s Brind-Amour managed to win only 10 of his 27 attempts.
