Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a set of related diseases in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar (specifically, glucose) in the blood. Glucose in the blood gives you energy to perform daily activities, walk briskly, run for a bus, ride your bike, take an aerobic exercise class, and perform your day-to-day chores. From the foods you eat, glucose in the blood is produced by the liver.

In a strong person, the blood glucose level is keeping up by numerous hormones, including insulin. Insulin is created by the pancreas, a small organ between the stomach and liver. The pancreas secretes other significant enzymes which help to digest food. The high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger).

At present, India is the diabetes capital of the world. This is estimated that over 40 million of persons with diabetes are now in India and that by 2025 that number will grow to 70 million. In simple words, 1 in every 5 diabetics in the world will live in India. Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, is responsible for 5% of blindness in adults and 1 million limb amputations.

Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a complex collection of hormone-producing glands which control basic body functions such as metabolism, growth and sexual development. The amount of hormones produced by each gland is carefully balanced. Too much or too little of a certain hormone can have effects throughout the body and cause different endocrine disorders.

Several of the hormones produced by the endocrine glands interact with each other to maintain balance. An Endocrinologist is a physician engaged in the study and practice of the endocrine system.

Obesity
Obesity means having too much body fat. It is not the same as being overweight, which means weighing too much. A person may be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water, as well as from having too much fat. A lot of obese people who lose big amounts of weight and gain it back think it is their fault.

They blame themselves for not having the determination to keep the weight off. Several people regain more weight than they lost.Overweight and obesity are both labels for series of weight, greater than what is generally considered healthy for an individual. Excess body weight is implicated as a risk factor for many disorders including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, female infertility, etc.

Many people find it hard to change their eating habits and behaviors. But an active way of life and regular exercise, along with healthy eating, is the best way to lose weight. Even modest weight loss can improve your health. You will need a lot of support from family and friends.
