We all recently enjoyed the company of our family over the holidays. If you enjoyed the company of your extended family, the chances are there was a family member there who had dentures, and it's likely that you noticed. |

This may have had a profound effect on you if you were considering dentures yourself. You may have said to yourself, "I don't want that--I'm never going to have dentures." But you need to understand--not all dentures are like that, and modern dentures are actually much improved.
Denture Innovations
There are many reasons why modern dentures are much improved over the traditional dentures you witnessed putting on a lackluster performance at the holiday get-together.
Dental implants have been around for almost 30 years, but it is only recently that they have become widespread. Now people can have dentures made that actually attach to dental implants, which are placed into the jawbone and securely fasten the denture to the jaw.
Dental imaging is one of the reasons why modern dentures fit better than ever. In the past, the only way to model dentures was to have a person bite down into clay to make a mold. Because this was uncomfortable and tasted disgusting, it was often hard to get people to bite down and hold the position until the clay dries, leading to poor impressions. With newer imaging techniques, it is possible to get more accurate imaging of the jaw and gums to create better-fitting dentures.
Dental materials have advanced significantly in just the last few years. Now dentures can be made of advanced materials that are both attractive and strong, making them virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Neuromuscular dentistry has also contributed significantly to better-fitting dentures. In recent years, many discoveries have been made about how occlusion (how our teeth fit together) interacts with other aspects of the dental system to create an overall healthy mouth. We have also learned how to treat the entire mouth as a system, including the function of the jaw joint, which can lead to a better and longer-lasting fit for dentures.
Are Dentures Right for You?
Dentures may still not be the right choice for your situation. But it's important not to dismiss them before you learn about the innovations in modern dentures that may make them right for you.
