Fortunately, if you're not prepared to go under the knife, many plastic surgeons offer nonsurgical rhinoplasty. This less invasive technique involves the use of injectable fillers to subtlety alter the appearance of the nose.
Not everyone is a good candidate for nonsurgical rhinoplasty. It isn't useful for those wishing for major transformations such as reducing the overall size of the nose, drastically changing the shape, or straightening out a deviated septum.
Nonsurgical rhinoplasty primarily targets small imperfections and imbalances, such as unwanted dents or small bumps. There are many different injectables that can be used to achieve the desired effect; common products include Restylane, Botox, and Radiesse. These injectables act as fillers, building up areas of the nose that need improvement.
The most commonly treated problem is reducing a prominent bump on the nasal bridge. The filler is injected above or below the hump to help smooth at the bridge, creating a straight line rather than a "wavy" appearance.
Some people fear this may create an even larger looking nose, but it in fact decreases the appearance, blending in with the face. Nonsurgical rhinoplasty can also build up a weak bridge or fill in dents in the tip of the nose. This can create a more symmetrical and pleasing aesthetic appearance.
The risks and recovery period for injectable fillers is a fraction of that of nose surgery. Traditional rhinoplasty patients risk infection, chronic breathing problems, collapsed septums, asymmetry, and the need for one or multiple costly revisions.
Recovery periods last from two to three weeks and complete healing can take up to a full year. Often patients suffer from visible bruising and blackened eyes for up to a week after surgery. The risks and recovery for injectable treatments is minimal in comparison.
Complications include prolonged swelling or tenderness and over injection, all of which generally resolve themselves within a matter of days as opposed to weeks or months. Recovery involves a possible over the counter pain pill and a few hours of redness.
This miracle "fifteen minute" nose surgery is a fraction of the cost of traditional rhinoplasty, has minimal recovery time, and carries far less risks. Although the results will improve your appearance, it won't be obvious to others that you've had any work done. It is a great alternative if you're not ready to commit to permanent surgery but would like to take a test drive. The results will last anywhere from six months to two years depending on the filler product used.
Regardless of whether you choose traditional nose surgery or the new nonsurgical rhinoplasty techniques, it is imperative that you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon. If you're unsure of which is best for you, your plastic surgeon can help you decide which method can help you achieve your aesthetic goals.
