NLP courses - is selling to your students ethical?

The practice of selling to students while running NLP Practitioner courses is becoming a common phenomenon. Is it ethical?

The market is now becoming swamped with NLP training in the UK.
Different governing bodies, different levels of qualifications and many of them promising incredible results to turn your life around.

All this is true of an NLP course (neuro linguistic programming course) and a lot more depending on the person who books onto it. It also depends on the trainer or the company who is running the course.

The people who gain the most personally and for their chosen use of NLP are those who really want to make it work them. We do get people who in fact come on the course with resistance to change or finding it difficult to address their own issues which in fact makes if extremely difficult not only for the trainer but also for the other members on the course. The difficulty with this is that many companies, instead of either declining the application of the student or talking at length with them to explain that if they have resistance to the techniques and ethos of the training course, they bank the money and accept them on the course.

The practitioner level courses can be a revelation for many, shifting their perspective on life, moving them to a place where they start to create results in their own life and taking complete responsibility for the changes they make, not taking on how other people react, understanding other people’s model of the world and creating really effective communication techniques which can transform interactions with around them.

The ethics of selling of selling to those students using the same techniques of double binds and embedded commands that you, as a Trainer, are teaching on the course is becoming an increasing problem.

One company I was training for until recently, in fact began to put pressure on to sell to the students while running the course and creating new sales directly to their office WHILE on the course. As far as they were concerned, each of the people on the course was potential to sell the next level of training to Master Practitioner and if they didn’t book while participating on the Practitioner course, then it was ineffective for them.

From my own view as a Trainer of Practitioner, Master Practitioner, Hypnosis and NLP in Sport, I believe that there should be no selling during these courses. The people who come on the courses have many issues to deal with and can be sometimes in a vulnerable state which, in my model of the world, is a betrayal of trust. Our job of training NLP, Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy and Sport Practitioner courses is a vocation and yes you have to charge for it, however the quality of the training, the building of trust and the support to your students is paramount and if people wish to move onto the next level with you, then they will.

If you find yourself being sold to at the start of the booking process then there is a sign that you will in fact be sold to during the course. If that is the case, take a look at the highest intention of the company or trainer – do they want to get the best from you or your wallet?
