New Crystalens AO Gives Better Depth Perception |

Although Crystalens AO promises to give many people better vision after cataract surgery, it is not a good solution for everyone. There are some significant risks associated with Crystalens, and people should have a detailed consultation with their ophthalmologist before making a decision. |

Every year, over three million Americans undergo cataract surgery. Cataract surgery replaces the eye's natural lens, which has become cloudy with age, with an artificial lens. Early cataract surgery was performed without a replacement intraocular lens (IOL), which seriously compromised a person's vision. More recently, lens replacement has been performed with monofocal lenses. Monofocal lenses let people see well at either close or far distances, but not both. People who receive monofocal lenses after cataract surgery generally wear reading glasses or bifocals. Then came multifocal lenses, which allowed people to see at a wider range of distances, but required a psychological adjustment as the mind was forced to sort out multiple conflicting images and select the clear one, something some people were just not capable of doing.
Crystalens, the First Accommodating IOL
Our eye's natural lens is a clear, flexible lens whose curvature can be changed to allow us to focus on objects at different distances. This process is known as accommodation. Most IOLs are unable to respond the way your natural lens did, so accommodation is impossible.
