Kidney stones are extremely painful and are formed in the kidneys. They are normally found where the ureter joins the kidney. The stone has to be removed from an opening at the top of the ureter. Occasionally the stone gets lodged in the narrow ureter to cause a great deal of pain. Sometimes, due to excessive damage, the kidney has to be removed too. In nephrolithotripsy, the stone is first broken up by the surgeon and then he or she removes the fragments of the stone through the tube.

The operation is done under the influence of general anesthesia or regional or spinal anesthesia to make a paitent feel minimum pain. During the process, a small tube is inserted into the kidney that helps drain the urine until the kidney heals. In the operation a cut is made usually round the back in the line of lowest rib or sometimes in the front of the tummy depending upon the kind of treatment. The front side cut is generally made when the kidney is to be taken out. Normally the healing process taking around 10 to 15 days depending upon the severity of the case and if the patient is given proper care.

The patients undergoing or expecting to undertake saurgery are required to take some precautions for easy and quick recovery. The patients are suggested to quit smoking and try to reduce wieght incase one is bulky.

The other problems like blood pressure, heart, lungs if a patients has then these should be made under control with the help a family doctor. In case a paitients is taking some tablets, medicines, inhalers then those should be in proper notice of the doctor and must be kept in their original packets and boxes. Before the operation the surgeon must be clearly told about any allergies to tablets, medicines or dressings so that those things should be taken care of. After the operation the patient requires proper care so it is most important to have an attendant or a family member to support.
