Mumbai Travel Guide

Mumbai, (formerly Bombay) is the capital of Maharashtra. A group of islands on the western coast of India have grown into the city of Mumbai.

It is the principle gateway to the Indian subcontinent. Mumbai boasts of having a mixed population that consists of people from various ethnic backgrounds. Mumbai derives its name from the local goddess Mumba Devi. Its former name, Bombay was derived from the Portuguese word Bombaim, which means �good bay�.

Lying on the coastline, Mumbai has a deep, natural harbor which makes it a major commercial center. As the financial capital of India as it houses some of the most important financial institutions like the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, and the National Stock Exchange. Corporate headquarters of many Indian companies and numerous multinational corporations are situated in this city. Mumbai also houses Bollywood, India's Hindi film and television industry.

Mumbai is home a large number of edifices and monuments which attract thousands of tourists here every year. The Gateway of India, Mumbai�s most famous monument was built to welcome King George V and Queen Mary. Mani Bhavan was the residence of Mahatma Gandhi and houses a library and memorabilia from Gandhi�s life. Bombay Natural History Museum is the largest organization working for conservation of natural resources. The Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai houses a rare collection of antique articles like coins, firearms and miniature paintings. The Elephanta Caves are a fine example of traditional rock-cut architecture and are accessible by ferry rides.

Chowpatty is the most famous beach of Mumbai with rows of shops selling Mumbai�s favorite snacks. Equally popular in Mumbai is Juhu Beach, which is always filled with hordes of tourists. Marine Drive, a boulevard bordered by the Arabian Sea on one side and classy buildings on the other, is another beautiful place. You must especially visit it at night when millions of yellow lights brighten it up. Esselworld, an amusement park near the Gorai Beach, is extremely popular with children with its range of rides. The Hanging Garden are in Mumbai are terraced gardens which provide picturesque views of sunset over the Arabian Sea.
