Moving Without the Stress

Moving your home can be a real challenge, especially if you have a family, work, and other day to day obligations. You’ve got to organize, pack, and label, all while managing your everyday life. It can be a stressful time and there are things you can do to alleviate the stress.

First, make a list of everything you need to do. Moving involves so much more than packing. You’ve got to make sure all projects are taken care of at your old place, and everything is ready when you move in to your new place. Moving involves not only packing; remember to call the phone company, cable company, electricity company, newspaper provider, post office, etc. These things can slip your mind as your move date approaches, not to mention you’ll probably be packing all of your files with contact information in them. So, make a list early, and check it often. Include any important contact information for services to make sure you have it easily on hand if you need it.

Outsource what you hate most. Take that list of things you need to do, and note the ones you hate the most, or that cause you the most stress. If you feel that it will ease your stress dramatically, consider hiring someone to do the pieces you hate the most. For example, you can hire a handyman for last minute fixes, or you can pay a moving company to pack your boxes for you.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Moving is a huge job, you don't have to do it by yourself. Depending on your personal situation, you may or may not have people around to help you move. Consider hiring a handyman or asking a neighbor to help you remove fixtures you're taking with you, or offer your friends a free dinner if they'll help you pack or unpack boxes.

Label items based on where they will go in your new home. There’s no point in labeling for where things were; you will thank yourself if all your office supplies end up in your office, and all you kitchen supplies end up in the kitchen. After all, you don’t want to waste your time shuffling boxes once you arrive. It’ll make it less work for you later, and it allows you to unpack more easily.

Pack your necessities separately. Anything you’ll need in the day or two of transitioning, keep separately. There’s nothing worse that realizing your shampoo is lost in a box at the back of the truck after a long day of moving. If you're moving locally this bag should have all those necessities you are positive you'll need your first night, including pajamas, toiletries, medication, sleeping bag, clothes for the next day, etc. And remember, if you have any small, valuable objects, you'll want to plan to keep them aside as well.

A few months before you leave, take stock of all the canned and boxed food you have in the cabinets. Rather than boxing them up, and adding to your moving cost - save money by eating in and using all these up. It may mean getting creative, but it will save you time and money later.

If you don’t use it, loose it! Throw out as much as you can before you move. It will be less to pack, and less to deal with.
