Move Others With Your Guitar:
The 3-Fold Guitarist

Want to move others with your guitar playing? Want to impress, inspire, and transform people-s hearts? You can, by embodying the qualities of a 3-fold guitarist.

This might sound cheesy at first, but the 3-fold guitarist has developed qualities of mind, body, and spirit. You have probably heard that trio your entire life. So this should be an easy way to remember the information in this article.

Mind

Mentally... The 3-fold guitarist has a vast knowledge of the guitar, style and music theory. This is the first element one must posses in order to move others. One must have knowledge in order to reach full creative potential.

Simplicity doesn-t mean bad. Pop songs, for example, are sometimes very fun. But the saying, "One-hit Wonder" is there for a reason. The wonders don-t know enough to create massive amounts of quality songs, must less two. Ouch...

Body

Physically... Just as an Olympic athlete performs at the highest physical levels known to man, the 3-fold guitarist rips, shreds, wails, picks, and burns rubber (at will). Even if you are not a jazzer or metal head, it-s imperative to have enhanced dexterity and agility.

Like with "mind," having top-notch physical abilities gives the guitarist unlimited creativity. It-s not about showing off (of course, that-s fun but anyway...). Rather, it-s about being able to—at will—turn some heads.

Spirit

Emotionally... Perhaps the most important element the 3-fold guitarist possesses is spirit. He performs with deep passion and great feeling. The best songs are those that change our lives. Wouldn-t you agree?

Therefore, the qualities of mind and body are virtually useless without spirit.

Applying the 3-Fold Theory

One method you can use to develop mind, body, and spirit, is study and emulate guitarists with these qualities. At the end of this article, you-ll find a list of guitarists with particular enhanced abilities.

But perhaps the most effective way to apply the 3-fold theory it to realize your weaknesses as a guitarist. If you are all head, pay special attention to the way you feel while playing. Try playing from the heart instead of thinking of music theory all the time.

Personally

I don-t teach guitar as much anymore because this very reason.

I dropped many students because I got too caught up in what was going on mentally and physically. My playing got stale. I needed to return to my roots, the real reason why I started playing in the first place—because music had moved me emotionally, because music stood the hairs up on the back of my neck.

I know doctors of music theory. They are impressive, but their music makes me want to hurl. I won-t tell them to their faces, but they are underdeveloped guitarists. After eight years of college and twenty years of teaching, they-d probably strangle me for saying that.

But it-s true. No one wants to hear music that-s spiritless.

Guitarists to Study & Emulate

Mind Guitarists:

1. Pat Martino, jazz genius.

2. Eddie Van Halen, an icon who played with great creativity, outside of the textbook.

Body Guitarists:

1. Jason Becker, a shredder from another galaxy who played in the David Lee Roth Band.

2. Joe Pass, an all out unbelievably skilled jazz guitarist.

Spirit Guitarists:

1. Neil Young—even though overrated—a man who has inspired thousands with songs like "Hey Hey, My My" and "Cortez the Killer."

2. Tom Petty, as simplistic as can be, but moving, eh? He-s written more hit songs than anyone I can think of.

Regarding musicianship, I live by the idea of the 3-fold guitarist. And so, I-m glad I could share it with you. Mind, body, and spirit guitarists move others.
