According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the most popular stolen car last year was the 1994 Honda Accord.

Out of the 52,000 Honda Accords stolen in 2010, about 44,000 of them were made in the 90’s. The bureau suggests that older car models are stolen for the value of their parts and newer models are stolen and then resold.

The 1995 Honda Civic placing second on the list and the 1994 Acura Integra placing eighth are popular among car thieves because their engines are easily swappable.

For example, you can switch out the more powerful Integra powertrain and put it into a more lightweight civic. Both models are popular among the street racing community and car remodeling enthusiasts, so the demand for those parts are high.

Even with over 700,000 vehicles stolen last year alone, the bureau states that auto theft is at an all time low, so is the national recovery rates according to the FBI. Cars that are being stolen aren’t being recovered as often, only about 57% of all vehicles are recovered after being stolen.

Take all the necessary measures to protect yourself from car theft, such as, locking your car doors, never leaving your car running while unattended, and always take the keys out of the engine. Adding electronic vehicle tracking systems such as, LoJack and OnStar can also help to speed up the recovery process.
